Contrary Vine

I can’t tell you how many times
I’ve seen it happen

tomatoes on vine fight
for color
fight for plump
fight to choke life out of
very vine
ego heavy, fall off
drop to ground bruised
rot in sun
all mashed and tasteless

I cannot tell you how many times
I’ve picked clean
this cherry tomato scab
to reassure I still bleed
still red, indeed

and the flies swoop down for sweet
garbage feast

  1. dang…we eat a lot of tomatoes…and have a grape arbor as well…you do have to tend the vine or it will choke itself….prune it…and i like how that plays against picking your scabs as well…just to be sure you still bleed….

  2. The tomato vine scene is a fabulous metaphor for self-injurious behavior, for the desire to assure one of one’s own existence and the damage rendered in the process.
