Restrictive Definition

Everyone is a god
damn critic
knifing outsiders’
complicated lives
into sliced bread
white or burnt toast

it is not so simple
to change a word
you have faith in
when you don’t believe
in restrictive
definition

come on
edit my physique
look for double meanings
when the message is
not clear
as polished glass

cut from
a different class
yet so quick
to drop the hammer
wearing suit & tie
civilized flies
fighting over
shit piles

we can’t all be Gandhi
so we
cut our fingers off

but we forgot the ice
and we bleed
such beautiful shades of red
to death.

  1. we can’t all be Gandhi
    so we
    cut our fingers off

    but we forgot the ice
    and we bleed
    such beautiful shades of red
to death….. dang this was tight…powerful, powerful

  2. awesome write Steve. Love the reflections, and yeah, some folks. I vent all the time, yet realize that with some types, there’s just no explanation for how they think and act. Killer poem.

  3. Incredible title for this piece Steve….. Absolutely nailed this…. Poetry is not what some stuffed shirt envisions…. Nor is it even what the poet intends. It is what the viewer sees. Nothing more, and nothing less…. No matter what we might sacrifice, fingers cut off if needed, the vision of the viewer is what creates a contract to great poetry…. Excellent!

  4. we can’t all be Gandhi
    so we
    cut our fingers off
    but we forgot the ice
    and we bleed
    such beautiful shades of red
to death….. this is so good and so true…!!!!

  5. some great lines in this…and line breaks too….everyone is a god…ha…and the cut from a different class def puts a relevant spin on it as well….tight piece man…strong words…speak it

  6. Love this.

    look for double meanings

^ Spoke to me the most. I take a look at my crystal ball but I can see only what I see if I knew the truth I could put the feelings aside. I understand.

  7. If I hold my breath long enough…I dream that this life I am living is by choice and not force. I’ve many suits but never have any suited me…and damn it…I want to be Ghandi! Imagine if we had built a world where dreams and passions were supported…rather than forfeited in order to provide food and shelter to our young one with their own dying dreams…I feel a rant coming on Sir Poet…and I can’t be dropping eff bombs at work! Where I sit chained to a desk, in a suit that never, ever fit! 😉 You know my mind tripped off on 100 different avenues with this one…awesome!

  8. “it is not so simple
    to change a word
    you have faith in”
    incredible truth right fucking here…

    “and we bleed
    such beautiful shades of red”
    …as we head for dead…
